Yet another toy for our Makers: the estimote beacon! Internet of Things has a lot of hype, but it will take longer for consumers to adopt and foresee the practical advantages of connected devices. Estimote’s goal was to bring interaction to everyday objects, with a beacon hardware and a developer platform, and now the startup is taking it to the next step with the Estimote Stickers.
How does it work?
Estimote Beacons and Stickers are tiny computers. They have a powerful ARM processor, memory, Bluetooth Smart module, and temperature and motion sensors. Powered by a coin battery, they broadcast radio signals through built-in antennas.
Smart devices in range receive those signals and compatible installed apps can then respond. The exact form of that response – whether a notification or another action – is up to you; the platform is fully flexible.
Estimote’s SDK and Cloud tie everything together by granting apps full access to the metadata, including beacon ownership, object type, and precise location. They also enable security and other services on top of the beacons.
